UBA Highlighted in recent Health Insurance Underwriter publication regarding Wellness Programs

“According to the 2010 UBA Employer Opinion Survey, nearly all (99.4%) of top decision makers consider corporate health care costs and 86.6% consider the impact on employees to be either a critical or significant concern. The ability of employers to afford their health care benefits has become more of a factor [over the past year], affecting 44% of employers.”

“As the benefits from a properly executed wellness initiative are becoming more universally understood, employers are learning that the way a program is launched and how it is supported over time is just as important as the number of free gym memberships handed out and the types of snacks in the company vending machine.”

The nation’s largest survey of employer health plans reports that the average annual cost per employee across all health plan types for 2010 is $8211.  In 2009 the amount was $7647, making this year’s increase approximately 7.4% over last year’s.  This includes all health plans – PPO’s, HMO’s, CDHP’s, EPO’s, and FFS plans.
The most prevalent type of plan offered nationally is the PPO.  More than 2.5 the number of HOM plans are PPOs, and they represent over 5 times the number of POS plans.
The UBA annual health plan survey compiles information on over 17,000 health plans nationwide.  The number of plans reported in this survey is more than 2.5 times larger than the number of the next three largest surveys combined.  Contact JRW Associates for more details and benchmarking from this meaningful survey.

Two out of every three employees – yes, 67% – have at least four health risk factors.  Many of these risk factors likediabetes, asthma, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol to name just a few, can be latent chronic conditions your employee may not even be aware of.  Others such as obesity, nicotine addiction, or stress may require various levels of support.

We hear every day about how roughly 70% of our nation’s medical costs are due to our unhealthy lifestyles.  More than 75 cents of every health care dollar spend in the US goes toward treating chronic diseases – arthritis, asthma, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes, according to CDC.  As an employer, the programs which address the overall Wellness of your employeess have become an investment, not a cost.

As more data becomes available on Wellness plans, programs, and incentives implemented by employers, the actual return on your investment can be demonstrated.  This year, over 13% of medical health plans across the US* offered some type of Wellness program.  That’s up nearly 25% from last year.

Contact us at JRW Associates for most statistics and information regarding Wellness programs, how they work, and how you can start receiving a return on your investment in as little as a year.
